Technische Universität München is one of Germany's leading technical universities and a founding member of TU9, consistently among the highest-placed German universities in international rankings, with particular strength in engineering, computer science, natural sciences and life sciences. It is distributed across several campuses: the Munich city centre (Arcisstraße - management, architecture, medicine), the Garching research campus (physics, chemistry, informatics, mathematics, mechanical engineering), Weihenstephan in Freising (life sciences), plus Heilbronn, Straubing and TUM Asia in Singapore. Unlike most German public universities, TUM charges tuition to non-EU/EEA students who newly enrolled from winter semester 2024/25 onward (typically €4,000-€6,000 per semester for Master's programmes, with exemptions and a small set of tuition-free programmes) - a Bavarian rule that neighbouring LMU Munich does not apply.

Services for international students
Your first stop for almost everything is the International Office: admission letters, visa questions, enrolment, and orientation weeks all run through it.
-
TUM Global & Alumni (International Office)
First stop for international students: arrival support, orientation and buddy programmes, and a dedicated KVR help desk that knows exactly what Munich's immigration office expects - use it before booking any KVR appointment. Official page
-
TUM Center for Study and Teaching (CST)
Admissions, enrolment, fee and scholarship/waiver administration - the office behind TUMonline's application workflows. Official page
-
General Student Advising (Studienberatung)
Programme choice and study organisation, before and during your degree.
-
Career Service
Jobs, internships and employer events; many run through the Deutschlandstipendium sponsor network. Official page
-
Psychological Counselling (Psychologische Beratung)
Free and usually much faster than the statutory-insurance therapy queue (3-6 month waits are common there) - go here first if you need support.
-
Language Center (Sprachenzentrum)
Free German courses at all levels during the semester (fee-based intensives in the breaks), plus other languages. Official page
-
University Library
Main site at Arcisstraße plus branch libraries in Garching (Boltzmannstraße 15) and Weihenstephan; several branches run 24/7 or extended hours.

Scholarship for International Students at TUM
Bavarian-government-funded cash grant of €500-€1,800 per semester for international students with academic merit AND demonstrated financial need (not BAföG-eligible). One-time per semester - reapply each semester, max 36 months. Master's students are eligible from the 2nd semester (from the 1st if your bachelor's was at TUM). Application windows recur each semester (SoSe 2026: 13-26 April). Official page
-
Tuition-fee waivers (merit / need)
For non-EU/EEA students subject to TUM's tuition. A waiver cancels the fee but pays you nothing - plan living costs accordingly. Typically covers ~2 semesters, renewable; merit waivers can start in the 1st semester for the top of the cohort. Own online application with its own deadlines (winter-semester window around 15-30 November); need-based waivers require 12 months of bank statements and income evidence. Official page
-
Deutschlandstipendium at TUM
€300/month (half federal, half private sponsor), one year and renewable. Rewards achievement plus personal commitment and circumstances, not grades alone, and connects holders to sponsor companies.
-
Linde / MDSI Master's Scholarship
€1,000/month, targeted specifically at Data Engineering & Analytics and Mathematics in Data Science students.
-
DAAD scholarship database
The definitive searchable database for international-student funding in Germany; TUM itself also points applicants to Stipendium Plus and mystipendium.de. Official page
Amounts, windows and eligibility rules change every cycle; verify on the official pages before planning your budget around any of them.
Campus systems you'll actually use (TUMonline · Moodle · Prüfungsamt / examination boards)
German universities split "one student portal" into several systems, and nobody tells internationals which is which. At TUM:
- TUMonline
- The central campus portal: applications, course and exam registration, grades, official documents and fee status. Everything administrative runs here. Exam registration has hard deadlines - missing one is the classic first-semester mistake. campus.tum.de
- Moodle
- The learning platform: course materials, slides, assignments and some online exams. Distinct from TUMonline - you will use both.
- Prüfungsamt / examination boards
- Exam matters beyond registration: credit recognition, deadline extensions, special arrangements.
