Universities
Germany's leading technical universities share a common character: they are research-intensive, industry-connected, and built to produce graduates who can solve real problems. Most are members of TU9, the alliance of the nine most prominent German technical universities, and several rank among the top 100 in the world for engineering and natural sciences. Tuition is free or nominal at almost all of them, funded by the state rather than student fees. What differs is location, research focus, campus culture, and the systems you will use every day once you arrive. KIT
KIT is the only German university that is simultaneously a state university and a national research centre of the Helmholtz Association — a dual mandate no other TU9 institution has, giving students unusually direct access to large-scale research infrastructure and paid research roles in energy, mobility, information technology and the natural sciences. It operates across two main sites: Campus South, in central Karlsruhe, where teaching is concentrated, and Campus North, the former nuclear research centre outside the city, which houses the Helmholtz research programmes — check which campus your programme uses before choosing where to live.

Leibniz Universität Hannover is a TU9 university named after Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz — the philosopher-mathematician who invented calculus and binary arithmetic — and traces its roots to an 1831 vocational school, becoming Leibniz Universität Hannover in 2006. It is strong in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, production technology, quantum optics and geodesy, and sits within Hannover's industrial base (Continental and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are headquartered in the region).

RWTH Aachen is a founding member of TU9 and one of Germany's largest and most prestigious technical universities, funded under the national Excellence Strategy. It is a global leader in engineering and the natural sciences - consistently top in Germany for mechanical engineering and materials science - with exceptionally deep industry ties, Europe's largest research campus (RWTH Aachen Campus) and the Jülich-Aachen Research Alliance (JARA).

TU Berlin is a founding TU9 university in the heart of the German capital, with one of the highest proportions of international students of any leading German technical university. Its Charlottenburg (City West) campus puts students in direct reach of Berlin's startup ecosystem, federal government, and international organisations, and it is widely regarded as Germany's leading university for urban and regional planning alongside its engineering, computer science and economics core.

TU Braunschweig
TU Braunschweig is Germany's oldest technical university, founded in 1745 as the Collegium Carolinum, and the ninth and final TU9 member profiled on this platform. Uniquely among the nine, its adjacent DLR (German Aerospace Center) campus gives students direct access to aerospace research facilities, thesis opportunities and industry connections unavailable at other German universities.

TU Darmstadt is a TU9 university in Hesse and, since 2004, Germany's first autonomous university — it manages its own budget, hiring and strategic direction independently under the TU Darmstadt Act (TUD-Gesetz), including some of its own admission and examination rules. It is consistently ranked among Germany's top computer-science and engineering universities, with particular strength in cybersecurity through ATHENE, Europe's largest cybersecurity research centre, and in autonomous systems and AI.

TU Dortmund is a public research university in Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia, founded in 1968, with 29,502 students (winter semester 2025/26) across around 90 Bachelor's and Master's programmes in 17 departments spanning natural sciences, engineering, social sciences and cultural studies. A member of the University Alliance Ruhr (with Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen), it has a strong research profile in statistics, computer science and engineering.

A founding TU9 member and the only one of the nine located in eastern Germany's new federal states - the largest university in Saxony, with roughly 29,000-32,000 students across 17 faculties. TU Dresden is one of Germany's Universities of Excellence, funded under the national Excellence Strategy - placing it among the country's most research-intensive institutions; the title was confirmed in 2012, 2019 and again in 2026, and it is one of very few institutions holding both the Excellence label and TU9 membership.

Technische Universität München is one of Germany's leading technical universities and a founding member of TU9, consistently among the highest-placed German universities in international rankings, with particular strength in engineering, computer science, natural sciences and life sciences. It is distributed across several campuses: the Munich city centre (Arcisstraße - management, architecture, medicine), the Garching research campus (physics, chemistry, informatics, mathematics, mechanical engineering), Weihenstephan in Freising (life sciences), plus Heilbronn, Straubing and TUM Asia in Singapore.

Universität Stuttgart is a TU9 university at the centre of Germany's automotive industry — Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Bosch are all headquartered in the region, giving engineering students unusually direct access to industry. Its strengths lie in mechanical, automotive and aerospace engineering, simulation science (the Data-Integrated Simulation Science / SimTech Excellence Cluster) and the natural sciences.
