This programme is multilingual — both German and English are required to apply, not English-only despite the name. It carries LUH's world-class optics and quantum-optics research identity (the university co-runs the GEO600 gravitational-wave detector and is deep in the LISA/laser-interferometry world). The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) — Germany's national library for science and technology — is based at LUH, giving students access to the deepest technical literature collection in Germany. APS is required for applicants from China and Vietnam.

Deadlines & timeline
| Who | Intake | Deadline | Details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-EU applicants | Winter semester | Non-EU/EEA-degree holders close six weeks earlier than EU applicants because a uni-assist VPD must be obtained first (itself taking weeks) — start the VPD process well before this date. | |
| EU / German-degree applicants | Winter semester | EU/EEA-degree holders (and holders of a German degree) apply directly in the LUH portal, no VPD required. |

Leibniz Universität Hannover is a Lower Saxony public university — €0 tuition for all students, including non-EU. The semester contribution is €453.16 (WS 2026/27, confirmed on LUH's own Rückmeldung page) — the highest in Germany, but roughly €270 of it funds the Deutschlandsemesterticket (nationwide regional transport, historically very wide-reaching to Kassel, Bielefeld, Lübeck, Hamburg and Bremen, plus 30 free sprintRad bike-share minutes per trip in Hannover), with the remainder covering Studierendenwerk and student-body fees. No application fee to LUH, but a non-EU/EEA degree requires a uni-assist VPD (€75 for the first application). The AStA offers interest-free loans for the semesters when the contribution falls due. Fully exempt on an approved leave semester (Beurlaubung).
Scholarships are listed per university: see LUH scholarships.
