Health insurance: you must have it before you enrol
Public statutory health insurance is mandatory for students in Germany. You cannot use private insurance as a standard international student. Enrol before or immediately after arriving; your insurance confirmation is required for KIT enrolment.

Banking: open an account early
You will need a German bank account for rent, insurance and the semester fee, and at KIT, for the SEPA mandate many students use to pay the €1,500 tuition at re-registration. KIT confirms students can open a free checking account; N26 can be opened before you arrive.

Finding somewhere to live
Cheaper than Munich, but do not mistake "mid-sized" for "easy": demand outstrips dorm supply and students have landed in emergency accommodation at semester start. KIT owns no dorms: the Studierendenwerk (2,200+ places) and Wohnheim e.V. (1,100+, including short-term rooms) run them, and two Karlsruhe options are worth knowing: the free students-only Privatzimmervermittlung and the rent-free "Wohnen für Hilfe" scheme. One thing to check before signing anywhere: whether your programme sits at Campus South (city centre) or Campus North (Helmholtz, outside the city).

Your semester fee funds only a base ticket for evenings (18:00-06:00) and weekends; budget separately for daytime travel.
